Raphael Felenbok, Cocoa Market Research
“As a cocoa market analyst, I am conducting fundamental analysis in support of our traders, subsidiaries and clients – continuously trying to answer the million dollar question: ‘Is the world having a surplus or deficit of cocoa?’
What is genuinely exciting about my job is that I have the opportunity to travel in origin countries, to discuss with farmers and count pods on their cocoa trees. Pod-counts enable us to forecast the size and timing of crops. It is therefore a very valuable indication for our buyers.
I have always loved the entrepreneurial spirit at Barry Callebaut. When I suggested extending the scope of our research activities to Cameroon, Indonesia and Brazil, in order to cover all origin countries where we have grinding factories, my boss fully supported the idea and I was able to promptly implement those projects.”
Raphael Felenbok is Head of Cocoa Market Research and started at Barry Callebaut four years ago as he was writing his final thesis about pod-counting operations in West Africa. Based in Zurich, Switzerland, he is travelling one week per month in origin countries.
